From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel. An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system. Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city’s Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.

Step 1: Pick a Class
If you played the first game, you're likely familiar with all the classes. For the most part, they are very similar as you go through the story, though it is in the harder end-game content that their abilities really take focus. Basically, you have a tank (Titans), DPS (Hunter), and a support (Warlock). You'll want to pick one to suit your playstyle as this will be your main class to get to Level 20 and do the end-game stuff.

Step 2: Story
Your first order of business is to complete and enjoy the story. Along the way you can work on some of the stuff in the next steps, as they each unlock as part of the story. While you play the story, you can look out for public events to turn heroic, flashpoints, challenges, and possibly even tackle the Nightfall. Once you complete the story, you'll be Level 20 with all subclasses for one character, and be well ready to jump into the end-game.

Step 3: Grinding
By this time, you'll likely have the majority of the game's achievements. The few actual difficult ones are for completing the Nightfall, the Raid, and one of those two in Prestige difficulty. For this, you'll need to grind out gear to raise your Power level. You'll need a minimum of 230 for the Nightfall, 260 for the Raid, and 300 for Prestige mode. See "The Prestige" for more info on gaining Power level.

Step 4: PVP
You can easily do this portion during Step 2 as it is not very long, but there is a Quest from Shaxx that will require you to complete some matches in the Crucible and get kills. Once you complete that and get to 260 Power level, you can try and get your win in the Trials of the Nine for the second PVP achievement.

Step 5: Subclasses
Likely you'll dabble with the two classes you didn't pick in Step 1 as you grind away with your main, especially if you generally play with the same group of people and your schedules don't always line up. That is a great time to spend on your alts to level them up. You need to get all three classes to at least Level 14 to unlock all their subclasses. After that, you won't need to play two of them at all and can stick with your main if you wish. However, it's good to have all three maxed out to be able to max our weekly rewards, and fill in for higher level content depending on what class is needed.

Note: If any of your achievements do not unlock when you meet the requirements (most notably "Long and Winding Road") try this method. The first game had the same issue, and when you log in the game checks your progress and will unlock any that should have and didn't.

[XBA would like to thank The Pants Party for this Roadmap]

Long and Winding Road40
Reach level 20.   (6)

You will gain experience for basically every action you take in Destiny 2. Killing enemies, completing any type of quest (patrols, adventures, story quests), and even competing in the Crucible. You'll most likely get to Level 20 simply by playing through the game's main story quest, but if not you will be given an immediate boost by completing a mission in the Traveler hub area that opens once the story is done. Speak with Hawthorne to start the quest, which is simply a matter of speaking with Ikora, Zavala, and Cayde. No matter what level you are when you do the quest, you'll jump right to Level 20. Hawthorne is marked on the map below.

Zavala's Lieutenant60
Acquire each Titan subclass.

Refer to "Ikora's Protégé" for more information.

Cayde's Pathfinder60
Acquire each Hunter subclass.   (4)

Refer to "Ikora's Protégé" for more information.

Ikora's Protégé60
Acquire each Warlock subclass.   (3)

For each character class, you will be able to unlock a total of two additional subclasses (the first is given as part of the story). The second and third subclasses will unlock at Level 7 and Level 14 - sort of. To actually unlock the subclass, you have to first find a Relic item specific to your class in any of the game's chests. If you're lucky, you'll get it right after hitting the minimum level. If you're unlucky, you may be a few levels higher before the Relic drops for you. Just open every chest you see and you'll get it eventually.

From there, you need to kill enemies. You can do this in PvE or PvP, doesn't matter. Public Events charge the Relic faster, so aim to do those if they're available. Once your item is charged to 100% you'll get an on-screen notification that says "Growing Strength" to confirm you can go to the next step. After seeing that message, load up the Director and a new mission on Earth called "Shard of the Traveler" will be available and once you complete this, the next subclass will unlock. This process is the same for both the second and third subclasses, and for all characters - only the name of the relic changes.

If you are not intending to use a character for any end-game activity, you can skip completing the story and simply grind public events to quickly level up and get the subclasses. If you would like to use them in the end-game, see "Long and Winding Road" for info on leveling while completing the story.

Show Me What You Got80
Complete Shaxx's Call to Arms.   (2)

Shortly into the game's story, Shaxx will be available to speak with at The Farm. This will begin a questline that asks you to participate in the Crucible. First, do two quickplay matches. Second, do two competitive matches. Third, earn "glory" in any Crucible game mode. Glory is calculated by how well you play. After an update a few weeks after the game's launch, it appears one kill is two percentage, while objectives and wining matches may contribute as well. There's a bit of ambiguity, but essentially just kill people and try to win, you'll be done in no time. I got it done in four matches. After those three easy tasks, speak with Shaxx and the achievement will unlock.

In A Flash80
Complete a Flashpoint.

Flashpoints are weekly challenges with multiple steps. These will be unlocked over halfway through the main story, given by Cayde-6 at The Farm. He will ask you to go to Earth and set down some patrol beacons. From there, you'll need to do three patrol missions on any planet. These work just like they did in the first game, by interacting with any of the patrol beacons marked by a grey diamond on the map. These are usually very short tasks for killing enemies, collecting drops from enemies, etc. After those are complete, return to Cayde and he'll now ask that you complete public events. Once done there, return to Cayde to complete the Flashpoint and unlock the achievement.

If you'd like a quick visual guide, this video explains it well.

The People's Hero40
Complete a Heroic public event.

Public Events are random encounters that will spawn from time to time on each planet. They are marked by a blue diamond on your map. You will get a five-minute heads up before one begins, so you can head to the location. Each event begins with a generic objective but has a hidden objective that will transform it into a Heroic event. It will get slightly harder and pays out with slightly better loot. They are all still fairly simple though. Each event and the secret requirements can be found here.

Heart of Darkness80
Complete a Nightfall strike.   (3)

Nightfall strikes will unlock after completing the main story questline. These are tougher versions of the normal strikes, and will rotate each week with only one available at a time. They come with a number of different modifiers (again, different each week) and the extra challenge will correspond to extra rewards. There is also a timer to the activity, with kills adding more time back on the clock. You will need a minimum Power level of 230 to tackle a Nightfall, and a higher Power level will make it easier to complete. You'll definitely need a full team of a similar Power level as well.

The Life Exotic120
Collect 15 exotic weapons or armor.

Exotic items are yellow in color, and the highest rarity you can have. They will usually have the highest Power rating for your level, and special perks that are very useful in certain situations. You will automatically be given three exotic items during the story, and you will get one for completing the "Show Me What You Got" achievement as well. Assuming you do that for all three character classes, that is already 12 exotics. You will likely get three others along the way as random drops from story/patrol or Crucible rewards, or you can always buy them from Xur when he begins showing up.

A list of all exotic gear and how to obtain it can be found here. You do not need 15 exotics on hand, just have earned them at some point for the achievement to unlock. Also, bear in mind you have to earn 15 different weapons or armor for this to unlock. If you've got 15 total, but two pairs of the same boots for instance, that is only 14 credited for this achievement.

Challenge Accepted80
Complete 30 challenges.   (1)

Challenges are the new name for Destiny's bounty system, and they work in much the same way. As you progress through the story, eventually Ikora will be available at The Farm, and she will be your contact to obtain new challenges. You will get three challenges in each different activity type (open your ghost to view them). You'll be doing dozens and dozens of these as you work toward the end-game grind. Most of them you'll complete without even really setting out to as they ask for fairly generic things, such as killing certain enemy types, or getting kills with specific skills.

These are the places/activities that will offer challenges:

  • Earth Patrol
  • Titan Patrol
  • Io Patrol
  • Nessus Patrol
  • Strikes
  • Nightfall Strike
  • Crucible Quickplay
  • Crucible Competitive
  • Raid

Using all of these activities, you could get 27 challenges done in one day, so you'll need at least two to unlock the achievement - though likely you'll just work on it over time.

Belly Of The Beast100
Complete the Leviathan raid.   (6)

To earn this achievement, you need to defeat the final boss of the Leviathan raid: Calus. You do not need to complete the entire raid, so if you find a group willing to bring you in for the final section, you can get the achievement that way. The raid has a suggested Power Level of 260-280, meaning the beginning is doable at 260 but the final section would need around 280 to be completed - however, Destiny recommendations are always way too low, so aim to be closer to 280 when you start to make it easier. Each section of the raid will reward you will loot to increase your level, so you should Power up as you go through.

The raid consists of many intricate encounters and puzzles, so it would be lengthy to write a text guide (though I'm sure some exist). Your best bet is to watch this video (gameplay only with text instructions) or this video (Maka streaming) to prepare yourself, and find a group who has already done it to explain things as you go. If you prefer to go in blind, you're likely looking at 11-14 hours worth of struggle. Going in with a competent group is 2-3 hours, and a very experienced group who can speed run it will be less than an hour.

Note: The order of the first few encounters will rotate each week, so you may need to skip around in the video to reference a specific encounter depending on where it falls. This video was from the order of the raid in its first week.

The Prestige120
Complete the Leviathan raid or a Nightfall strike on Prestige difficulty.   (2)

Prestige difficulty can be selected from the Director when launching the Nightfall or Raid. The Power Level recommendation is 300, and you can not change your loadout after entering the activity. The timer on the Nightfall is shortened from the regular version, but other than that, it is largely the same activity, just harder.

Since this activity requires the highest Power level, I figured here would be a good place to link a guide to leveling. That guide also has links to two other guides at the bottom if you're still confused in any way. Between the three you should easily be able to get your Power level maxed out.

Lest Ye Be Judged80
Encounter an Emissary from beyond.   (1)

To earn this achievement, you have to win one match in the Trials of the Nine PVP mode. After winning the match, a new social space will open up and you can then speak to the Emissary of the Nine. Trials of the Nine is a limited mode that is only active every weekend (Friday to Sunday).

Before you can participate in Trials of the Nine, you must have completed the game's main story campaign, the Call to Arms milestone at least once (doesn't have to be completed in the same week you want to enter Trials - see the "Show Me What You Got" achievement for how to do this milestone), and have at least a 260 Power Level. Trials of the Nine does not have matchmaking, so you'll also need three people to join you as well.
