Introduction:
"Dragon’s Lair, the fantasy adventure where you become a valiant knight, on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon…"

Welcome to Dragon’s Lair, the fully animated laser disc video game from 1983. Developed by ex-Disney animator, Don Bluth, this game takes you through the wizard Mordroc’s castle in search of Princess Daphne, who has been kidnapped by the evil dragon, Singe. You will fight your way through 30 different levels, or scenes, as you try and save the beautiful princess.

The game is very simple, yet you need to time your moves perfectly if you want to survive. It’s just a matter of memorizing the moves (or by looking at the walkthrough HERE) and timing them so you clear each scene with no trouble at all. Or you can play with the move guide on.

There are 30 scenes; including the dragon’s lair (the Falling Circular Platform scene has a 3-ledge and 9-ledge variety, but it still counts as one scene). 8 scenes are "mirrored", and you play through all of them before you reach the dragon’s lair. You play through each scene using the left thumbstick or the D-Pad (easier to use the D-Pad). The moves are , , and . There is also a Sword button (). That’s it.

The game allows you to save at the beginning of each scene. It is extremely helpful if you want to complete the game without losing any lives (see "Flawless") or if you want to at least get to the dragon’s lair without dying for the perfect score (see "Lair King").

There are two game modes, Arcade and Home. When playing on Arcade mode, the game switches to a different scene each time you die. In Home mode, the game stays on the same scene when you die until you complete it. This is especially useful for the "Eat Me" achievement.

Step 1 (Easy Playthrough):
Note: "Giddy Gone" can only be unlocked by playing on Easy.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with the game and want to play with the move guide on during your Easy and Hard playthroughs, you will need an additional playthrough to play with it off (to unlock the "1983 Mode" achievement).

The game automatically sets your lives to "5". Go to Help & Options > Settings > Move Guide and select "Off". Finally, go to Help & Options > Settings > Arcade Monitor and select "On". Choose to play on the Easy difficulty in Arcade mode and then start the game.

In this playthrough, you will be going for:

  • "One More Quarter" - Completed the game in Arcade Mode.
  • "Going Down" - Got off on the last (9th) floor of the falling platform.
  • "Giddy Gone" - Used the shortcut move in the Giddy Goons Room.
  • "1983 Mode" - Completed the game with the move guide turned off.
  • "Save Me!" - Completed the game in any mode.
  • "Flawless" - Completed the game without dying.
  • "Lair King" - Got a high score of 427,469.

Save when each scene starts, so if you die, you can reload the game. To get everything listed above except "Lair King", you have to kill the dragon with all 5 lives intact, without dying, play the game with the move guide off, and use a controller. See "Lair King" in the guide for strategies on how to get that achievement in this playthrough.

If you play this playthrough offline and changed your PC's date, you can also unlock:

  • "Date with Daphne" - Played Dragon’s Lair on its anniversary: June 19.

Please note that this achievement is based on the GMT +0 time zone, not your local time, so playing it at any time on June 19th may not unlock the achievement. Please read the thread that explains unlocking this achievement HERE.

Step 2 (Hard Playthrough):
The game automatically sets your lives to "5". You can leave the move guide on if you want. Choose to play on the Hard difficulty (doesn't matter what Mode) and then start the game.

In this playthrough, the only achievement you will be concentrating on is "Quest Complete." You can also unlock "Choked Out" in this playthrough since you can die (if you unlocked "Flawless" in your previous playthrough). Just complete the game before all 5 lives are used up.

Step 3 (Random Achievements):
This two achievements require playthroughs of their own.

  • "Eat Me" - Lost your last life in the Drink Me scene... and watched carefully.
  • "Bumbling Knight" - Never make a correct move in a new game.

Conclusion:
Congratulations on a relatively painless and enjoyable 200. With a little time and some patience, you’re bound to memorize the moves for each scene, making the game that much easier.

Look at my walkthrough located HERE to see the solution to every scene to make your playthroughs easier. Beware these do contain spoilers. You have been warned.

Scoring Guide:
Dragon's Lair Scoring Chart

  • This score chart is 100% accurate if you are playing on Easy/Arcade mode (with the exception of one 3-ledge Falling Circular Platform scene - see below)
  • The Drawbridge scene is missing from this list (since the scene only shows up in Home mode playing on either difficulty, not Arcade mode). Either way, there are no points awarded for this scene.
  • The Falling Circular Platform 3-ledge mirror scene is also missing (which awards you with 3,304 points on both Easy and Hard difficulties, both Arcade and Home mode).

"Lead on adventurer. Your quest awaits."

Save Me!10
Beat the game on any mode.

Start the game on Easy. Then just complete the game (kill the dragon) before you run out of lives. You can play in either Arcade or Home mode, but if you are going for "Lair King," it must be done in Arcade mode.

This achievement can still be unlocked if you lose all your lives and choose to continue playing the game.

1983 Mode20
Completed the game with the move guide turned off.     (2)

At the main menu, go to Help & Options > Settings > Move Guide and select "Off".

Date with Daphne30
Played Dragon’s Lair on its anniversary: June 19

Simply play the game on June 19th, doesn’t matter what year. You can unlock this in any of your playthroughs, but to avoid more playthroughs, unlock this while going for all the Easy playthrough achievements (see Roadmap). You can play in either Arcade or Home mode, but if you are going for "Lair King," it must be done in Arcade mode.

Please note that this achievement is based on the GMT +0 time zone, not your local time, so playing it at any time on June 19th may not unlock the achievement. Please read the thread that explains unlocking this achievement HERE.

Quest Complete30
Completed the game in Hard mode.

Start the game on Hard. You can play in either Arcade or Home mode. Then just complete the game (kill the dragon) before you run out of lives.

Difficulties do not stack (as there is no achievement for completing the game on Easy), so you must play through the game at least twice so you can unlock "Lair King" on Easy. You cannot unlock "Lair King" if you play on this difficulty (Hard mode is missing one point-awarding move [the first whirlpool in the Raging Waters scene], so you can’t get a perfect score).

This achievement can still be unlocked if you lose all your lives and choose to continue playing the game.

Flawless10
Beat the game without dying

The game automatically sets your lives to "5". Start the game on Easy. You can play in either Arcade or Home mode, but if you are going for "Lair King," it must be done in Arcade mode. This achievement requires you to not die for the entire game.

This achievement will be difficult at first since you won’t know the moves for each scene. A good suggestion is if you successfully clear a scene, pause the game and write down what you did. Or you can use the walkthrough posted HERE. When you’ve played the game a few times, you will have memorized most of the scenes. The more difficult ones will be the scenes that only show up later in the game (since you won’t be playing those as much).

My advice is to save at the beginning of each scene so if you die, you can just reload the game.

Lair King20
Get the highest possible score (427,469).

The game automatically sets your lives to "5." Start the game on Easy/Arcade. This only works on the Easy difficulty playing Arcade mode. (Hard difficulty is missing one point-awarding move [the first whirlpool in the Raging Waters scene], so you can’t get a perfect score playing on Hard. Home mode is also missing the first 49 points awarded in the game [most likely it will be the Crumbing Vestibule scene]). It doesn't matter if the move guide, move beeps or the arcade monitor is on or off.

One word about the Falling Circular Platform scenes; there are four different versions of this scene (a 3-ledge and a 9-ledge, each mirrored/reversed, making four scenes). To get a perfect score, you must jump off the platform at the last possible ledge (either 3 ledges or 9 ledges) to get the maximum amount of points. Use the strategy described in "Going Down" to see which scene you are on.

Another note about one other scene that could screw up your score: the Snake / Mist Room. The correct moves (according to the move guide) are , , and . You can bypass the third input and press instead, but you will miss out on 49 points (which is necessary for this achievement). So, when you get to this scene (the one with the red/black/white snakes), make sure you input FOUR moves, not three.

Save at the beginning of every single scene, so in case you die, you can just reload that save. You have to make it to the dragon's lair without dying.

You shouldn’t have died at all by the time you reach the dragon’s lair. When you do reach it, you should have 288,494 points, and when Dirk says "Wow", it quickly adds another 49 points to your score (for starting the scene, making your score 288,543). Many people think that you reach the dragon’s lair with 288,543 points, which is false. The points get added very quickly so it seems that you start the scene with that amount of points. If you have less than 288,543 points after Dirk says "Wow", then you won’t get this achievement. Save your game at this point if you have the required points.

Play through the scene as normal, inputting the correct moves. When you get to the final move (pressing to kill the dragon), don’t press it. Purposely let the dragon kill you. Do this a total of four times. Save your game each time you start the scene with one less life. On your last life, kill the dragon. If you die a fifth time, simply reload the save and repeat the final life.

  • When you reach the Dragon's Lair for the first time, at the very beginning right after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 288,543 points (5 lives left). Save the game.
  • After your first death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 315,338 (4 lives left). Save the game.
  • After your second death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 342,133 (3 lives left). Save the game.
  • After your third death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 368,928 (2 lives left). Save the game.
  • After your fourth (final) death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 395,723 (1 life left). Save the game.
  • On your final life, when you defeat Singe, you should have 427,469 points and the achievement.

The reason for this is when you die, you start the scene over again, and you accumulate all the points again up until you are to slay the dragon (which in itself is worth 5,000 points). If you were to kill the dragon with all five lives left, you would end the game with only 320,289 points. On each of your four lives, you get an additional 26,795 points (for all moves excluding 5,000 for slaying the dragon), so 26,795 times 4 (lives) equals 107,180, plus 320,289 equals the top score of 427,469.

If you saved your game when you reached the dragon’s lair (with the appropriate score), play through it without dying and slay the dragon to unlock "Flawless." Then, just reload the save and do what is explained above for this achievement. That way, you only need one playthrough on Easy for the entire game.

Going Down10
Get off the elevator on the last floor

First, when you first recognize this scene (you will see Dirk from behind jump off a circular stone staircase into a dark doorway), save the game. Then, let the platform fall to the 3rd ledge. Do not jump on it. If the scene continues and goes to a 4th, 5th and 6th ledge, you’re fine. Just let it go down to the 9th ledge them jump off by pressing in the direction of the ledge (as soon as the platform stops) and the achievement will unlock.

If this scene is the short one (only three ledges) and it crashes into the floor after the 3rd ledge, just quit the game and reload (resume) your save and jump off at the 3rd ledge. Chances are that early on in the game it will only be the three ledges. The game will eventually have the scene where there are nine ledges (twice, actually. This scene is mirrored). Just remember to save at the beginning of the scene!

If you are going for "Lair King", you have to jump off at the last possible ledge (points are not awarded if you jump onto any ledge other than the 3rd or 9th one), so make sure that you save at the beginning of the scene to see if it is the 3- or 9-ledge scene. Then jump off at the appropriate ledge for the maximum amount of points.

You can unlock this in either Arcade or Home mode, but if you are going for "Lair King," it must be done in Arcade mode.

Giddy Gone10
Use the shortcut move in the Giddy Goons Room     (2)

Normally (according to the move guide), there are four moves to this scene: , , and . When you do the shortcut move correctly, you skip the second command entirely. Here’s how:

First, save your game when the scene starts in case you miss the move. Then, after you press to walk up the stairs, before the Giddy Goons appear at the top of the staircase, press . This will bypass the Goons appearing, thus ending the scene.

The picture below shows the last possible moment you can press before the Giddy Goons appear at the top of the stairs. If you miss this opportunity, just reload the scene.

Note: This can only be done on Easy mode since it’s required that you press on the stairs on Hard mode, in either Arcade or Home mode, but if you are going for "Lair King," it must be done in Arcade mode.

Note II: Skipping this one move does not affect the scoring if you are going for "Lair King," as the command you normally press after you press on the stairs doesn’t award you any points. Pressing instead of awards you with the same amount of points.

Choked Out20
Dirk dies via asphyxiation in the bedroom scene     (2)

When you recognize this scene as the one where the wall closes up on you, press either or . This will cause Dirk to not move and the room be filled with toxic gas, killing him.

When you press or , the wall closes up and the room fills with gas. Pressing and will reveal another death scene (Dirk being trapped in the wall).

Note: This can only be done on Hard difficulty, in either Arcade or Home mode.

If you are following the roadmap, your Hard playthrough should be just to complete the game to earn the "Quest Complete" achievement. You can lose lives, but make sure you don’t lose them all. Save this achievement for that playthrough.

Eat Me20
Lost your last life in the Drink Me scene... and watched carefully.

Although the scenes are random, from my experience, it comes pretty early on in the game. Instead of pressing to exit the room, don’t press anything.

Note: Play this in Home mode. This allows you to repeat the scene as long as you don’t complete it (as opposed to Arcade mode which changes scenes every time you die). So no matter how many lives you have left, the game will keep repeating this scene if you don’t press .

The title to this achievement is actually an easter egg in the original arcade game: "If you lose your last life on the "Drink Me" scene, when Dirk's skeleton crumbles down, the bottle with the 'Drink Me' sign is missing but replaced with a loaf of bread and a sign that says 'EAT ME'."

Secret Achievements

Bumbling Knight10
Never made a correct move in a new game.

This is very simple to unlock. Start a new game in Home mode and purposely press the wrong direction to kill yourself. This way, the same scene keeps repeating. Remember never to make a correct move; just make the wrong move five times in a row.

After you die five times, do not continue the game. Let the counter reach 0; this will unlock the achievement.

One More Quarter10
Completed the game in Arcade Mode

'Arcade Monitor' is a setting Help & Options menu. With this enabled, you play the game in SD (standard definition) with the arcade cabinet surrounding the screen.

At the main menu:

  • Help & Options > Settings
  • Select "Arcade Monitor" and press to select "On"
  • Start any game and the achievement will unlock.
