As Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary makes its worldwide debut today, we're reminded that it's been a whole decade since the original Xbox launched in the US on November 15th, 2001, introducing Halo to the world in the process. Competing with the SEGA Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube at the time, the Xbox brought a lot to the table, with 'only on Xbox' exclusives and the introduction of Xbox Live in 2002.

Launch titles for the Xbox included Halo: Combat Evolved, Project Gotham Racing, Amped, Dead or Alive 3 and Jet Set Radio Future, giving Microsoft a strong foothold with its first home console, and since then, the Xbox brand has gone from strength to strength with Xbox 360 and of course, achievements. Xbox Live has grown to embrace over 35 million members and Xbox has become an iconic, household brand name.

Announced at GDC in 2000 by then MS CEO Bill Gates, the Xbox had shifted 24 million units as of May 10th, 2006 and it was later in the same year that Microsoft then decided to discontinue the console to focus on Xbox 360. So, tip your hat, raise your glass or do a little dance for the Xbox, and ten years of a console to be rckoned with. Here's to you, Xbox! Happy birthday!
