Skylanders Will Be Skipping A Release This Year, But Activision Is Keeping the Series Alive

Even though last year's Skylanders release - Skylanders: Imaginators - was received poorly commercially, Activision has stated that the series will remain in production in one way or another, despite the lack of a console edition of the game this year.

Last year, Imaginators managed to shift only 66,000 sales in its first month - a sharp drop for a series that set a trend in the toys-to-life market and was once one of the highest-grossing properties Activision had on its books.

In a conference overnight, Activision announced that Skylanders isn't dead yet: 2017 will see more content and physical items release for Imaginators, as well as a port of the game for the Nintendo Switch.

Whether this will be the fate of the series from here on out remains to be seen - perhaps Activision wants to avoid the kind of market saturation its been guilty of in the past with other properties it's pushed too hard... Tony Hawks and Guitar Hero being the most obvious examples.

Activision did announce a new mobile game is planned for the series, however, and that the recent Netflix series Skylanders Academy was successful enough to warrant a sequel later this year.

If another game does return to consoles, it's highly likely that series developer Vicarious Visions won't be returning - Activision moved the studio onto new pastures over on the Destiny team last year (which is probably the new trend for the publisher, which used to farm studios out to make Call Of Duty map packs if their own projects weren't performing adequately enough).

We're interested to see what the pioneering toys-to-life brand goes from here.
