Disney Invites Developers to do "Unique Things" With Their IP

Written By

Speaking at the DICE Summit, Disney's Senior VP for Games & Interactive Experiences Sean Shoptaw extended an invitation to developers to work on interesting games using Disney-owned franchises.

"I'm here for one specific reason - to empower you to do really unique things with our [catalog]," Shoptaw told the game developers in attendance. "We want to tap into the power of creatives across the industry."

Shoptaw referenced the success of Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, when speaking about the importance of original storytelling, and how developers can reimagine what Disney characters and settings can be, and asked developers across the industry to "come and play" with their vast selection of IP.

“We want to dream big and look forward to all the things we can do together."

This all sounds very promising, but we do know that Disney has been quite strict with exactly how game developers can use their IP in the past - for example, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was nearly a shooter as Disney did not want Respawn to use Jedi in their game. Hopefully the success of recent titles means they may afford their development partners more trust going forward.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
