Major Nelson Says Mixer Integration Won't Be Replaced By Facebook Gaming on Xbox

Written By

Following Microsoft's announcement that they would be shutting down their in-house streaming service Mixer and partnering with Facebook Gaming, Xbox's Larry Hyrb (Major Nelson) has confirmed some more details for how this affects users going forward.

Responded to concerns from Xbox One owners on Reddit, Major Nelson confirmed that Facebook Gaming wouldn't be integrated into the Xbox One in the same way that Mixer was.

"If you are asking if the current Mixer integration in the dashboard is just going to become Facebook gaming. The answer is no," explained Hyrb. He also responded to concerns about privacy from players who didn't want their details shared with Facebook, stating "We are committed to respecting your privacy and personal information. Unless a Mixer streamer takes action to ask Microsoft to share data with a platform, no Mixer streamer personal information will be shared."

Xbox boss Phil Spencer also stated that Xbox and Microsoft want to "give gamer choice of where to stream from Xbox" going forward, and Hyrb expanded upon that in the same Reddit thread.

"We want anyone who has an Xbox to stream where they would like. Built-in broadcasting from Xbox One will be temporarily disabled in the transition after July 22 so we can build it into a more social experience for Xbox players.  In the meantime, players can stream their gameplay from Xbox One using the Twitch app or by connecting to a PC and streaming via software such as OBS or XSplit."

Microsoft's decision to shut down Mixer came as a shock to many streamers who had built a career on the platform, and it may take more than a few short statements to calm concerns from players and users who aren't happy with the partnership with Facebook. We'll see how this unfolds over the coming weeks.
