Xbox Series X Likely to See Game Prices Increase

Written By

Video game publishers are considering raising the standard price for games on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, according to a report from

Yesterday saw 2K announce that NBA 2K21 will be coming to next-gen consoles at launch, and the publisher has set the pricing for the basketball title at $59.99/£59.99 on current gen consoles, and $69.99/£65.99 on next gen consoles. However, it wasn't clear if this was a 2K specific decision, or if game prices are likely to increase across the board for next gen titles. reached out to games research firm IDG Consulting, and IDG CEO Yoshio Osaki confirmed that other publishers are also considering raising the prices of games for Xbox Series X and PS5.

"The last time that next-gen launch software pricing went up was in 2005 and 2006, when it went from $49.99 to $59.99 at the start of the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation," Osaki said. "During that time, the costs and prices in other affiliated verticals have gone up."

Osaki claimed that production costs for next gen have increased by up to 300%, but game prices have remained static for fifteen years. In comparison, other industries such as TV and cinema have seen prices increase as costs increase, with streaming subscriptions, cinema tickets and cable TV packages all increasing in price since 2005.

"Even with the increase to $69.99 for next-gen, that price increase from 2005 to 2020 next-gen is only up 17%, far lower than the other comparisons. While the cost of development and publishing have gone up, and pricing in other entertainment verticals has also gone up substantially, next-gen software pricing has not reflected these increases. $59.99 to $69.99 does not even cover these other cost increases completely, but does move it more in the proper direction," Osaki explained.

"IDG works with all major game publishers, and our channel checks indicate that other publishers are also exploring moving their next gen pricing up on certain franchises, for the same reasons outlined above. Not every game should garner the $69.99 price point on next-gen, but flagship AAAs such as NBA 2K merit this pricing more than others."

Video game publishers have been working to recoup costs in other ways during the current generation of consoles, with controversial practices such as in-game microtransactions and loot boxes providing a secondary source of income. Other publishers, such as THQ Nordic, regularly provide premium limited editions or collector's editions of their titles at increased price points.

Xbox Series X is due to launch later this year in Holiday 2020.
