Sony is Looking to Acquire Developer Splash Damage's Parent Company

Written By

Sony is considering a bid for Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong-based video game company that counts developers such as Splash Damage and Digital Extremes as its subsidiaries, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Sony aren't the only bidders in play, with Chinese rivals such as Zhejiang Century Huatong Group and iDreamSky Technology Holdings Ltd. also in buyout talks, but Sony has hopes that it will be able to "edge out" the competition with the promise of greater certainty of financing. Leyou's controlling shareholder Charles Yuk is expected to make a decision as soon as the end of the month.

If Sony was to prove successful, this would add Warframe developer Digital Extremes to its roster of developers, as well as British developer Splash Damage. The latter is of particular interest to Xbox gamers, as Splash Damage has been working closely with Microsoft since 2015, aiding development on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 4, Gears 5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and led development on the upcoming Gears Tactics.

Leyou also owns a 20% share in Certain Affinity, with an option to buy out in full after 2020. Certain Affinity has also worked on Xbox exclusive titles such as Halo 2, Halo 4 and the Master Chief Collection.

Were this deal to go through, it's unclear how the subsidiaries could be affected, but Sony could easily be looking to add those development teams to its first party line up. We'll likely find out more in the coming months.
