Xbox Game Pass Isn't a Short Term "Profit Play"

Written By

Xbox's Aaron Greenberg has explained that Xbox Game Pass isn't focused on short-term profit in an interview with What's Good Games.

When asked how profitable Game Pass is for the company, Greenberg played down concerns that Xbox may struggle going into the next generation. "We always kinda laugh, we just say, "Listen, please don’t worry about us. Microsoft is gonna be alright"," Greenberg said.

"It’s a different mindset, because if you do optimise for profit you can either say, “How do we get as much profit out of each customer?" Or, do you pivot that opposite and say, "How do we add as much value to our fans, how can we actually over-deliver on value?" - and if you do that, you build fans for life."

"Ultimately, we think long term that’s the right thing for the business, and will have long-term benefits for us. But, in the short term, yeah, it’s not a big profit play."

We love a little bit of Xbox Game Pass over here at XBA, as it continues to offer some of the best value for money in gaming today. We had mixed thoughts over the Xbox Games Showcase last week (which you can hear here) but the stinger that every game shown will be available at launch on the service was very impressive.

Xbox Series X is due to launch Holiday 2020.
